Contrabassoon

Charles Koster holds a master’s degree in music theory from the University of Iowa and pursued doctoral studies at Indiana University. As a period instrument bassoonist, he has performed with Musica Angelica (Los Angeles), American Bach Soloists (San Francisco), Seattle Baroque Orchestra, Tafelmusik (Toronto), Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra (San Francisco), San Diego Bach Collegium and Portland Baroque Orchestra. As a “modern” bassoonist, Mr. Koster has been a member of orchestras in the United States, Mexico and Germany, and has performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, Pasadena Symphony Orchestra and Pacific Symphony Orchestra. He has published several articles relating to historical bassoons and reed-making in the Journal of the International Double Reed Society. He has recorded for the Delos, Koch, Newport Classics and Wild Boar record labels.
