Pasadena CAย โ A whoโs who of Hollywoodโs music elite is coming out to play withย Michael Feinsteinย at theย Pasadena POPSโย August 16thย Hooray for Hollywoodย concert, presented in partnership with theย American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP)ย at theย LA Arboretum. Four of ASCAPโs top film composers and lyricists will perform their hit music with the POPS:ย Alan Bergmanย (โWindmills of Your Mind,โ with Marilyn Bergman andย co-written with Michel Legrand, 1968 Oscar winner fromย The Thomas Crown Affair),ย Michael Giacchinoย (music fromย Up, winner of the 2010 Oscar for best original score),ย Bruce Broughtonย (music fromย Silverado,ย 1986 Oscar nominee for best original score) andย Paul Williamsย (โEvergreen,โ co-written with Barbra Streisand, 1976 Oscar winner fromย A Star Is Born).
Powerhouse vocalistsย Maureen McGovern, Debby Boone, Sheleaย andย Kevin Earleyย will make special guest star appearances, singing such iconic songs as โThe Way You Look Tonight,โ โThe Sound of Music,โ โThe Man That Got Away,โ โStormy Weather,โ โBlues in the Night,โ โYou Light Up My Lifeโ and โOn the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe,โ plus beloved music fromย Mary Poppins,ย The Magnificent Seven,ย Funny Girlย and a symphonic arrangement of Pharrell Williamsโs 2014 Oscar-nominated song โHappyโ fromย Despicable Me 2,created especially for the Pasadena POPS.
Hooray for Hollywoodย is part of ASCAPโs ongoing, year-long 100thย birthday celebration. ASCAP hit its 100-year milestone in February and is celebrating the centennial with a new book, a commissioned short film, and an innovative website featuring a timeline of ASCAPโs rich history. In addition, celebratory and educational events spanning the country include a Library of Congress exhibit in Washington DC, reflecting ASCAPโs energy and expertise throughout its history advocating for music creatorsโ rights. The family-friendly concert will be held at the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden. The grounds are open for picnicking and dining at 5:30 p.m. and performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Among many venue amenities, audiences can enjoy pre-ordered gourmet dining packages for onsite pickup from Julienne, Marstonโs and Claud & Co. The food court will host mouthwatering food trucks plus specialty ice creams by Choctรกl. The experience is now even more convenient with two full beverage centers serving fine wines, beer, coffee and soft drinks plus exclusive hotel packages for POPS patrons at Pasadenaโs landmark Langham Huntington Hotel. The Pasadena Symphony Association was founded in 1928 by Conductor Reginald Bland. Originally named the Pasadena Civic Orchestra, its first members were mostly volunteer musicians, many of whom were students of Bland. The annual operating budget was $3,500, which was funded entirely by the City of Pasadena.
The Pasadena Symphony and POPS is an ensemble of Southern Californiaโs most talented, sought after musicians. With extensive credits in the film, television, recording and orchestral industry, the artists of Pasadena Symphony and POPS are the most heard in the world.
In the fall of 2007, the Pasadena Symphony incorporated the Pasadena POPS into its Association under the new name Pasadena Symphony and POPS. This merger created an expanded Classics and POPS series providing the community with a full spectrum of live symphonic concerts year-round. In the summer of 2012, the Pasadena POPSโ relocated its summer home to the Los Angeles County Arboretum where it has been performing to record-breaking crowds and critical acclaim. The Pasadena POPS announced Michael Feinstein as its new Principal Pops Conductor in August 2012; he will be the first conductor to hold the Marvin Hamlisch Chair title.Under Feinsteinโs leadership, the Pasadena POPSโ has quickly become the nationโs premier presenter of the Great American Songbook in the orchestral arena delivering definitive performances of rare orchestrations and classic arrangements.
The Pasadena Symphony provides a musical experience like no other at the Ambassador Auditorium โ known as the Carnegie Hall of the West โ where they have been the resident professional orchestra since 2010. In 2013, the Pasadena Symphony named Maestro David Lockington as its fifth Music Director and appointed Nicholas McGegan as Principal Guest Conductor.
A hallmark of its robust education programs, the Pasadena Symphony Association has served the youth of the region since 1972 through the Pasadena Youth Symphony Orchestra comprised of over 200 gifted middle school students from more than 40 schools all over the Southland. The PYSO most recently performed on several episodes of the popular television showย GLEE.
