PYSO 2026/27 Auditions Are Now Open!

We’re excited to welcome both new and returning students to audition for the Pasadena Youth Symphony Orchestras’ 2026/27 season (September 2026 – May 2027)! Auditions are a wonderful opportunity to showcase your skills, meet our faculty, and find the ensemble that’s the best fit for you.

Auditions will be held at Pasadena High School on May 16–17, 2026. The audition fee is $35, which helps cover site and faculty costs.

We encourage all young musicians to apply—whether you’re new to PYSO or returning, we can’t wait to hear you play!

PYSO offers an inspiring orchestral experience for dedicated young musicians, guided by experienced faculty and supported by a vibrant musical community. With seven ensembles designed for every level of student, there is a place for musicians at every stage of their development.

Our ensembles rehearse weekly throughout the season, giving students a consistent and engaging environment to grow as musicians while building connections with their peers. Students perform in at least two concerts each year, sharing their progress and hard work with family and the community.

PYSO students are typically in grades 6–12 and come from schools across the San Gabriel Valley. Self-sufficient students below 6th grade are considered for our Prelude Strings ensemble only.

Our rehearsals require students to work independently, manage their instruments, follow directions in a fast-paced setting, and collaborate with other musicians in a large ensemble. For most students, this environment is best suited to those in 5th grade and above.

We encourage all interested students to apply and take the next step in their musical journey—don’t hesitate to apply, even if you’re unsure of placement!

• Detailed preparation requirements and audition requirements for each instrument and ensemble can be found here
  • For students interested in auditioning on harp or piano, placement in these positions depends on the needs of each ensemble and the repertoire being performed. Please contact Education Manager Brian O’Donnell at brian@pasadenasymphony-pops.org for more information and to inquire about availability.
• Auditions are held in person and include a prepared solo, scales, sight-reading, and additional audition components based on your instrument and level. Auditions are approximately 12-15 minutes.
• A $35 audition fee is required at the time of application
  • This fee is non-refundable
  • It can be paid online or in person on the day of your audition
  • The fee is waived for students in a Pasadena Unified School District music program or for those who require financial assistance
• All applicants will receive audition results by email
• Placement decisions made by the conducting staff are final

Important:
You will be considered for all PYSO ensembles, regardless of the orchestra you select. Our faculty will place you in the ensemble where you can be most successful, which may be different from your initial selection.

• Auditions are approximately 12-15 minutes in length
• Students should arrive prepared to perform their prepared solo, scales, and any additional requirements
• Results are typically sent via email following auditions
• Accepted students will receive enrollment information, including details about season participation and fees

• All orchestra members are strongly encouraged to participate in their school music programs when available, as this supports daily practice, strengthens sight-reading skills, and builds strong musical communities
• PYSO is committed to making our program accessible to all qualified students. Financial assistance for tuition is available for families who qualify. Please contact us for more information about the application process and eligibility.
