Audition Requirements

The Pasadena Youth Symphony Orchestras offer multiple ensembles for musicians of all ages and skill levels.  The audition consists of three components (four for those auditioning for Philharmonic): solo repertoire, scales, and sight reading. Auditions last approximately 15 minutes. The solo repertoire and scale audition information for each ensemble is listed below.

All students are required to bring a second copy of the solo part for the audition panel.

Sight reading: There will be multiple sight reading examples available during the audition; students may be asked to play more than one selection, based upon the discretion of the audition panel. Percussion students may perform their sight reading on snare drum, timpani, or mallets.

Excerpt: Students auditioning for Philharmonic, our highest level ensemble, will be asked to prepare 2-3 excerpts. While 2-3 excerpts are posted at the bottom of this page for each instrument, students will only be asked to perform one of them. Once again, only students auditioning for Philharmonic are being asked to prepare the excerpt. Those auditioning for Symphony, String Orchestra, or Wind Ensemble do not have to prepare an excerpt.
